COLLECTIBLE FAIR: Probably the best European design show

Since its creation in 2018, the Collectible fair quickly became one of the most awaited design show, and possibly tied with Milan. Indeed, with only two years of existence, Collectible is already asserting itself as a fair where of quality exhibitors and products can be seen. During the few days of the show, the press, designers, architects, galleries and collectors revolve around the best pieces of the moment, finally giving the Collectible Design its dedicated exhibition in Europe.

Founded by Clélie Debehault and Liv Vaisberg, two seasoned women more than familiar with the Art world internationally, Collectible have brought a new freshness and hope for connoisseurs in search of the best pieces of contemporary design, Europe being historically rooted in the tradition of big publishers and design for the many. The Collectible fair is today the very example of a wanted and expected change in the world of design and designers themselves, that of being more akin to art and able to free itself from the major brand and ordinary fairs. Find out the best pieces that have caught our attention!

The parisian gallery A1043 presented very different pieces from each other at collectible Fair but with contemporary design and relatively new pieces as a guiding thread. This is how it was impossible to miss this extraordinary sculptural bench of the designer Michael Schoner. A stainless steel piece folded like a sheet of paper, and whose facets allow to create the architecture of the bench. In addition, we also noticed the lamp Van den Nieuwelaar of the duo De Vrijgieterij (Lucas Maassen & Hossie), and of which colorful plaster with a flowing appearance seems still fresh... Very nice designs.

Air de Paris

The best of collectible design furniture pieces on view at Collectible fair 2019.

Although we are entirely dedicated to contemporary design, it must be said that the Collectible fair is one of the events where reissues and contemporary design are going together very well. In that sense, we have therefore noticed some interesting pieces like Yellow Chair/Blue Chair, presented by Air de Paris, an identical remake of the chairs that the French artist Guy de Cointet created in 1982 during his performance at the Théâtre du Rond Point.

Angela Willemsen / Maria Tyakina

It is with the utmost pleasure that we see designers previously met in other fairs. So we find Angela Willemsen – met at London Design Fair and who has partnered with Maria Tyakina in order to present a new version of her Shift Mirrors, limited edition. Thanks to a heating technique, the metal is coated with a layer of oxide that gives it in turn copper or gilded aspects... Nice work.

The éditions du côté – French publishing house of furniture and art works – presented on its stand two great pieces: firstly, the mirror Rayon Vert. Allegory of the horizon, its polished stainless steel bluish mirror surface has a strong reflectability and designers, Studio Briand & Berthereau, intend to bring us to a reflexion/reflection... Then, the coffee table Maddi Bi, to the cork base. Very graphic, the creation of Joan Tarrago combines good know-how and high creativity.

We were aware of the work of Studio OrtaMiklos and Functional Art Gallery, so we were delighted to see the incredible Iceberg collection in person, duly represented within the Study Room. Make no mistake, these imposing furniture are of the greatest lightness, because made of expanded polystyrene with very thin and successive layers of resin. So every element seems to be immortalised forever and we like this. A bit like the artworks of Andy Warhol presented by their side, these pieces will undoubtedly go through time without hindrage. Very nice collection.

Galerie Scène Ouverte

The Galerie Scène Ouverte presented design pieces that we paid particular attention to: indeed, we have found the work of designer Léa Mestres, whose work had amazed us during the Bienniale Emergences, as well as the massive work of American ceramist William Coggin, which happily reminds us of the roots of the blog. Two very beautiful sculptural pieces that have a real place in the Collectible Design and who participate in making the collectible show, an event where we will return every year!

It's Great Design

The best of collectible design furniture pieces on view at Collectible fair 2019.

The parisian gallery It's Great Design publishes projects of young designers spotted as prototypes, often during graduation presentations. The founder of the gallery, Marguerita Ratti, then helps to give a finished look to these design gems and thus supports the emerging designers. So we have seen the mirror Reflet by Claire Lavabre (presented at the famous Villa Noailles in 2013), composed of black granite and an ultra-reflective glass, thus renewing the classic look of mirror. There was also the fantastic installation Mirage by Juliette Le Goff and Nicolas Verschaeve, a panel of moving fabric that changes colors and appearance when activated by hand...

Designer Jesse Visser was present at the show, and featured several collectible design pieces in limited edition. Thus, one could appreciate the mirror Triptych XL, halfway between art and a functional decorative element as well as the light pendant Sunset/Sunrise, recreating these two natural phenomena in a very poetic formal application...

Kostia

The best of collectible design furniture pieces on view at Collectible fair 2019.

The collection Monolithe of designer Kostia is beautiful and ingenious, presenting pieces with simple lines, curved, sublimed by the work of brass. Between furniture and art, the monoliths are gradually subject to contemplation and functional objects, from which to enlarge the ranks of a collection already well filled with pieces with strong and affirmed design.

Maniera

The best of collectible design furniture pieces on view at Collectible fair 2019.

Specializing in architects furniture, the famous Maniera gallery displayed on its booth at Collectible fair the last creation of MOS architects (New York). The Low Resolution Chair is modular according to no less than 31 combinations, consisting of one or more planar surfaces (that of the seat) and steel supports acting as base or backrest. A raw architectural design crude, and undoubtedly imagined in homage to the building materials. Great piece.

Passionate about aluminium, the London gallery MDR dedicated a special installation in tribute to this fascinating material at collectible. In the form of luminaires, small furniture, sculptures or mural works, pieces of designers known as Sigve Knutson or emerging ones like Wendy Andreu were part of this very noticeable selection. A harmonious exhibition and pieces that complemented each other wonderfully. Bravo.

Fully bathed in metallic tones such as bronze, copper and brass, and once again entirely dedicated to metal working, the two collections presented by the gallery MRM leaves few people indifferent... On one side, the latest collection of its founder, designer Marcin Rusak. A pioneering range of furniture focused on the pictorial qualities of metal fusion, and transforms the industrial process into a real asset for art. On the other hand, the gallery has teamed up with Studio Truly Truly in order to present luminaires from the same technique: thus, a desk lamp, appliques and a lamppost illuminated the stand and created the unit with the collectible furniture design presented. Very nice collection.

At the Collectible fair, the NERO design gallery included new pieces of Duccio Maria Gambi, and especially made for the gallery. The artist wished to work on the duality of materials used and the feelings they provoke in his Guerra Freddacollection. For instance, concrete and tiles are cold-touch materials, but depending on their application, or color, they can be perceived under a completely different way. Beautiful elements in homage to the brutalistaesthetic, but not without a poetic dimension.

Nicolas Erauw

Nicolas Erauw is a young designer from Belgium who works raw materials using old or industrial processes, but leaves a great place for experimentation. He also recreated a machine inspired by the ancestral manufacture of candles, TONK, in order to use this process of casting for bronze or even aluminum. Each piece shaped by the machine is unique and gives a beautiful raw appearance to his pieces, such as this chair presented at the Collectible fair.

It is with pleasure that among the furniture, we discovered two new collections of the artist Emily Forgot presented by Skal Gallery. If you are familiar with her work, you are not without knowing Emily's taste for colors, and above all her expertise in terms of harmony in this field. This is how we were able to admire Strebelle (4 pieces) and Viewpoint (4 monochrome pieces), wooden paintings playing with volumes and shades to recreate architectural emblems

Design studio SMENT exhibited the collection Gestalt, an exploration and experimentation of concrete in good shape. Indeed if each of the pieces appears massive to us, the choice of an aerial material gives an incredible lightness to the collection, which one can almost perceive to the eye... Between real functionality and Sculptural, the Studio presents an essential collection, where the exploration of the material goes to the service of the formal intention. Very nice work.

The designer Stine Mikkelsen presented a new collection oflight objects in the collectible design style during this edition of the show. Created from a composite material invented by the Studio (granite and glue), these luminaires stood out in the center of the room for their sculptural stature and their deep black, almost hypnotic. Thanks to the Luminous Shapes, the young designer once again affirms her talent in the category of experimental design and collectible design. Nice work.

Studio Furthermore

The Studio Furthermore, whose work is borrowing from a strong materiality, presented Moon Rock at Collectible fair, an exploration of the future and the materials that might appear. On the assumption that man tends to exploit every resource he discovers, the studio projects us towards an era in which Lunar rock becomes a material on Earth. Building, furniture, this new matter that one imagines ultra-solid and very light at the same time, makes its entrance to the market...

Objects of Common Interest was invited by Sight Unseen to create a unique installation on their booth, for this second edition of Collectible. It is an immersive space, giving access to another dimension and well imagined by the Studio. Indeed, tubular luminaires have an appearance of objects which will stand the test of time, thanks to a process of reflection, and thus to the infinite repetition of their forms. Playing between the linearity of these luminous elements and the massive and soft appearance of sculptural and unexpected seats, the New York studio OoCI and Sight Unseen have presented a space in which one can voluntarily lose himself between abstraction and reality...

The Impermanent Collection displayed two types of projects, very different, which caught our attention: first of all, it was impossible to miss out on incredible Ker-Xavierchairs, originally created in 2016 by Benoît Maire – artist and co-founder of the brand with Marie Corbin, architect – for the exhibition scenography of Julien Carreyn. Alternatively showing a tribal or ultra-contemporary look, these unique style chairs are undeniably timeless. In direct interaction with these, we discovered with pleasure the work of the Belgian designer Pierre Coddens, who created remarkable tubular luminaires made of brass and silicone under the name of Dear Eva (in tribute to the artist Eva Hesse). Shaped with the artist's own body, silicone gives flexibility to these giant light objects, thus being able to be arranged according to each...

In its work, Yellow Nose Studio is committed to exploring and seeking the balance between know-how and traditions and contemporary times. At this edition of the Collectible Fair, the studio Berlin has presented the collection N-02, a gentle mix of sculptural and conceptual furniture and nature-inspired tableware. Each piece of furniture hides or on the contrary exposes a storage space for tea making facilities, highlighting the ceremony and the little moments of happiness that accompany the tasting...

Zaventem Ateliers is a unique place in Brussels where makers and designers have the opportunity to meet and work together in a place conducive to creation. For this edition of collectible, the workshops presented works designed or imagined within them. Thus, it was very much appreciated Thrown Chair Touche Touche and mirror ofalfa.brussels, the Chaud Side Table of Charlotte Jonckheer, and the Bold Chair by Linde Freya, in golden version.
