What you should remember about Design Miami/ 2018

Design Miami/ has become a major event in the tiny world occuring between art and design, and for which we have interest, that of collectible design. In fact, for a few years, enthusiasts and specialized press of these collector-style objects and furniture are travelling the world several times a year to find the best specimens. Selection of the best galleries, and the best products.

The Carpenters Workshop Gallery is an inherent part of the landscape, when it comes to collectible design. For this edition of Design Miami/2018, it focused on the presentation of new works of Vincenzo De Cotiis, as for examples the dining table DC 1742As usual, it is made of recycled fibreglass and marble textures. But also the pleasant Chandelier DC 606, in silver plated brass and Belgian glass... One of the very expected pieces was also the Soft Stool by Rick Owens, a raw style with highly sophisticated finishes.

Among the panel of designers presented, the gallery Cristina Grajales displayed the colourful and architectural work of the Korean designer Sang Hoon Kim. Sofas and other generous foam seats are his vision of design, which he believes should be an integral part of architecture. Thus, each piece is designed for a function, but above all to participate in dividing and organising the space. These simple shapes and colours quickly give rhythm and harmony to the spaces that, little by little, these elements build around you.

Not surprisingly, at Etage ProjectThe set consisting of a side table and a stool called "The Pairing" was obviously not to be missed. FoSantomá, according to the collaboration of Fos and Guillermo Santomá. These uncertain shapes, which were displayed at the Design Miami/ 2018 event, were achieved by working with EVA foam and applying a powerful paint used for car upholstery. A graphic and interesting proposal.

The recent Functional Art Gallery to Berlin, offered what we think is the best booth but also the best products. Indeed, we are closely following the gallery and had previously noticed the extraordinary work of designer Théophile Blandet. This opalescent light and minimalist staging probably have a lot to do with the visual and emotional impact of his pieces. Future Artefacts is the name under which the collection is presented, or a poetic and pragmatic immersion in a near future where access to materials, and the materials themselves, will have changed. In line with a return to primitive design – meaning with assets, time and resources available – French designer is transforming our vision and blurs the tracks about the properties of materials he puts forward. Well done.

The Gallery All is the first Chinese gallery to offer limited edition design objects of artists and designers. Also based in Los Angeles, the gallery has recently moved into its catalogue the collection Synthesis Monolith, of young designer Hongjie Yang. This work, centred on the limit between human intervention and non-intervention on an element or an environment, shows furniture that would be finished machined on the one hand, and left raw, as if found in nature on the other.

The contrast between smooth and rough allows us to appreciate the mirror all the more, once it emerges from its chrysalis of aluminium and bronze in its natural state. In this work, everything is metamorphosis: the material, the object, but also the journey that our mind and eyes make of themselves, in order to accompany the birth of these new elements. A remarkable work.

Design Miami/2018 is always the opportunity to find out new CuriosThese are small cabinets of curiosity in which artists, designers and gallery owners install objects around a theme. Harry Nurievfounder of Crosby Studios, has for the second time proposed an installation in connection with his Russian origins, with both a satirical and softened look. Thus, the designer wants to remember that he made his debut in a small design studio in Russia, and also wants to highlight the craftsmanship of his country, by highlighting materials from tradition. The furniture, stamped Balenciaga, is an emancipation signage but also of belonging to this context.

Inspired by plants and marine biology, Eva gives birth to biomorphic forms that appear to be alive, and recreates an immersive universe in which it is very easy to immerse yourself...

In the category of ceramics and curiosities of Design Miami/2018, discover now the intriguing sculptures ofAnne-Marie Laureys for the courtesy of the Jason Jacques Gallery. Presented under the theme Women in Clayand alongside many others talented ceramistsAnne-Marie's work is absolutely remarkable. These forms, of which one does not know if they are really solid, undulate between shadows and light until they fascinate. These almost chimerical sculptures have a sensual and organic allure, ready to escape us in an instant. Formal and colourful experiments that succeed to perfection.

Design Miami/2018 was also an opportunity to discover Perma, the latest collection by designer Marcin Rusak. Presented for the Sarah Myerscough His technique of dried flowers sealed in resin has become familiar. Unlike his previous pieces, these are massive and sculptural, and play with the codes of conventional furniture. Nature, in its third cycle of life, after having been flowers of the fields and vases, becomes immortal, and an integral part of furniture. Poetic and grandiose.

Side Gallery is undoubtedly one of our favourite galleries. Indeed, the panel of contemporary objects on view on its booth are all surprising, and the designers show an overflowing creativity that we deeply love. Designers who are none other than Guillermo Santomá, and his two versions of Bed Carpet Tableand Sabine Marcelis and her Totem Lights. The two protagonists, who are now well known at fairs such as Design Miami/ and many others, are once again securing their places as essential artists thanks to their extraordinary pieces.

Southern Guild is the leading gallery for contemporary and collectible African design. This year, it returns to Design Miami/ 2018 with bold and immersive works that are a testament to the talent of African designers. We have chosen the following works, which, like their creators, deserve to be known: the triptych of mirrors by Jop Kunnekethe fabulous and sculptural chairs Leng-Kapa-Leng and Yang-Kapa-Yang of emerging designer Atang Tshikarethe lunar suspension Orbit by Jesse Ede, and these massive totems by Zizipho Poswa. Many good design people to follow closely and of which to watch the appearance on the international stage...

Table sculptures in metal.
Iridescent ceramic stool.

Finally, we have selected pieces from the collection of The Future PerfectLA gallery American. First of all, it's impossible to miss the magnificent work - and you will hear about it - by Floris Wubben. A Dutch designer, he has designed a series of four massive tables in ceramic (stoneware), a material he is particularly fond of and with which he has worked for several years. The glazed finish gives these tables a superior aura, as if bathed in light and colours from elsewhere. We appreciate their compact but elaborate proportions, as if modelled in the mass. Other products to keep in mind are the table sculptures by Christopher Stuart and the ceramic stools series of Reinaldo Sanguino.

Thanks to all the galleries and designers for their collaboration.
