Fernando Mastrangelo uses colors to pay tribute to Dubai's energy

In the next edition of Dubai Design District, designer and maker Fernando Mastrangelo will present The Capital Collection, a mirror series paying tribute to what makes this city so special at the desert's gates...

A tribute to an entire region

Dubai is a huge and intense city, created from scratch in the 1830s by men eager to surpass nature. However, this ultra-modern architectural block, dotted with skyscrapers, has a sandy foundation. What could be more interesting then, on the occasion of the event Dubai Design District 2019, than asking a designer familiar with this material, to intervene and create an in situ work related to the history of the city?

Fernando Mastrangelo was therefore chosen and imagined The Capital Collectiona three-mirror series reflecting the history, the architecture, and the landscape of this unique city. Composed of tinted mirrors - and therefore of sand - and hand-dyed sand as the main materials, this series of immersive works allows one to both discover and see what everyone wants to see and discover in Dubai.

Because if some people see wealth and too much urbanity in it, the designer has taken care to reveal what he believes makes the magic of the place, by putting forward, as usual, a point of view whose reflection and raw materials are from nature.

Fernando Mastrangelo: taking advantage of color

The Capital Collection is declined as follows: the mirror Sahara celebrates the vastness and power of the sun and sand in the atmosphere of Dubai, when Marina draws our attention to the importance of water, and in particular its architectural impact on the city, and finally Aurora, pays tribute to the beauty of the sunsets that can be seen there, unlike anywhere in the world.

What interests us here in the work of Fernando Mastrangelo, is the use of color, frank and vivid. Because if we had already seen golden tones in his works, fuschia and blue-tinted glass are a great first. Although using the same unique technique of successive layers of various materials, he had accustomed us to deep blacks, creams and light purples, among others. The use of new colors would almost give his installation a certain power, capable of measuring itself against that of Dubai and its intensity, density, and huge proportions.

A collection that is both strong and finely crafted for the Dubai Design District, opposing and bringing together alternatively architecture and nature and the power of a city and its components, as small as a sand grain.
